Dempsey's Donuts was born during my first year of teaching, back in 2005. I was teaching first grade then and had stumbled across this great picture book Arnie the Doughnut, by Laurie Keller.
I read this with my class and then asked them to do a creative writing piece titled "If I was a donut..." The students wrote and illustrated fantastic little stories. Then we invited parents and families to come into the classroom to listen to students read their donut stories. We served donuts and coffee and called it "Dempsey's Donuts".
As I moved on to teach other grades (2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th) I continued the tradition of Dempsey's Donuts, inviting parents into the classroom each year to hear their children read their writing.
This blog is something that I have dreamed of for a long time. I wanted to create a place where students can meet online to review and discuss books, creating an online book community to appeal to the digital natives in my classroom. I have an amazing group of 5th and 6th graders starting out on this adventure with me. I can't wait to see what we can create together!
Expectations for my awesome students:
