This week I read On Board the Isaac Webb from our classroom reading text. The story is about a courageous girl named Lisbeth and her family who leave their home in Liverpool, England and sail to New York. Lisbeth is courageous for moving to a new place that is so far and so different from her home. She had never been on a merchant ship before and was woried about the rough seas.
Lisbeth and her family face many hardships along the way. The seas are rough and they run into the worst storm to hit the merchant ship route that season They endured a week of severe weather and the ship was damaged by the winds. The broken ship had to slow down which caused them to run out of provisions. Then, the Isaac Webb became stuck on a sandbar. They were too far off the coast to dock so the crew and passegners had to wait to see if other ships would come to tow them out.
I enjoyed reading this story because the characters were interesting and brave. The author used great description and details when describing the story which made it easy for me to visualize what was happening. I could almost feel the wind blowing when the author wrote that, “The sound of the wind screaming through the air made my eardrums feel as if they were going to burst!” On Board the Isaac Webb is definately a story I would recommend.
